- Linda L., Bronx, NY

Her Story: This past spring my husband and I were on a two week beach vacation in Mexicowith a handful of our relatives. Two evenings before we were supposed to head home, I had intense abdominal pain and was immobile–which turned out to be an acute case of pancreatitis. The condo manager called a physician to come check my vitals, and ultimately recommended I go straight to a hospital. They made arrangements to send me to a private hospital where I was immediately admitted and put on IVs. The hospital charged the first day to our credit card which totaled $4,000. The next day the administration informed my husband they were going to charge the card again per day. Instead of waiting and letting charges build up, he called Allianz Travel Insurance. Luckily, we had recently purchased annual plans through the company since we travel often as retirees. Our representative immediately took over. She talked directly to the hospital and handled all communication and aspects of my care. Our wonderful representative also stayed in touch with my husband the entire time. After five days I was well enough to be discharged, and Allianz handled everything for our return flight as we had clearly missed our originally planned departure. While in the Mexican hospital there were a few other Americans who were having a terrible time –even those with insurance. Someone asked us which insurance plan we had and I was so happy to tell them “we have Allianz.” We couldn’t be happier with the customer service and care we received!

The claims process was terrific. We were in Mexico and I was in a hospital and the claims representative took care of the hospital and the doctor bills over the phone. Rachel Davis was terrific. There were no issues, she made it so easy. Then when we came home, we did everything online submitting the expenses incurred for other related matters -prescriptions, travel changes, etc. And that was very smooth as well. Can't say enough good things about this experience.

“When we take another significant trip like this one, we will be purchasing travel insurance again. It adds a small cost to our trip, but it ended up saving us hundreds of dollars.”

- Kevin F., Higginsville, MO, October 2019

His Story: This was our first-time purchasing travel insurance and I’m one hundred percent happy that we did. A few things were up in the air with our trip to Cozumel, Mexico, and we decided to purchase the insurance so we could have the flexibility to make changes if needed. We purchased our Allianz plan through the American Airlines website when we bought our airline tickets – it was very convenient. My wife, daughter, daughter’s friend and I were scheduled to fly to Cozumel in mid-June, but the day before departure we received an email from American Airlines cancelling the flight due to predicted bad weather in Dallas, TX (where we were scheduled to have a short layover). We were scrambling to find an alternative flight to Cozumel, and the weather in Dallas ended up being fine (80 degrees with clear skies). We found another flight, but it flew into a different city –Cancun –and it had over a 6-hour layover in Florida. When we returned from our trip, I sent a strongly-worded letter to American Airlines, but they told me it was not their policy to compensate expenses as a result of cancelled flights. We then reached out to Allianz, who instructed us to submit our receipts –close to $800 –for the expenses we incurred during our longer, unexpected layover in Florida, and the transportation costs from Cancun to Cozumel. Allianz made the claim process smooth and easy.

When we take another significant trip like this one, we will be purchasing travel insurance again. It adds a small cost to our trip, but it ended up saving us hundreds of dollars.

Allianz resolved the issue without requiring us to be overly involved it was an extremely easy process for us.

- Thomas T., Addison, TX, October 2019

His Story: My wife and I decided to purchase travel insurance for our trip to Peru because we felt it would be worth it in case something was to happen. We have used Allianz travel insurance many times in the past and have never needed to file a claim. We purchased separate policies for our trip because we used airline points from two different accounts. This trip we had multiple issues, resulting in claims on both policies.

We traveled to Cusco, Peru –elevation nearly 12,000 ft above sea level–and my wife had difficulty adjusting to the elevation level. After a day, she was still not able to get acclimated and was experiencing difficulty breathing. The hotel gave her a few minutes of oxygen, but that wasn’t enough, so they called a local clinic where she stayed for 8-9 hours for oxygen treatments. I contacted Allianz to let them know she was in the hospital, and they coordinated directly with the medical staff as well asour health insurance company. Allianz resolved the issue without requiring us to be overly involved –it was an extremely easy process for us.

At the end of our trip, as we were just about to leave for the airport to fly home, our American Airlines flight was cancelled. The airline wasn’t going to give us a voucher for a hotel, but luckily, we were able to check right back into hotel we were previously staying at until we departed the next day on our rescheduled flight. I was able to submit and process my claim for the extra night at the hotel with Allianz when I returned home. Both claims covered the complete cost of the covered issues. We are planning more trips in the future and it’s worth it for us to purchase travel insurance again.

“We have several upcoming trips planned this year, and we plan to purchase travel insurance again.”

- Bradley W., Greenville, SC., October 2019

His Story: My partner and I travel about six times per year, both domestically and internationally, and we always purchase travel insurance. You just never know what could happen. For our trip to Pennsylvania, we purchased our Allianz plan through the American Airlines website when we bought our tickets. It was very convenient – before you check out you receive a prompt with the option to purchase travel insurance. The day before we departed on our trip, I came down with the stomach flu. My partner decided to still go on the trip, and I cancelled my flight. I called Allianz and spoke with the politest representative. She explained the process, I submitted my paperwork via mail and five days later I received my refund check. I thought it was going to be a stressful process, but it was quick and easy. We have several upcoming trips planned this year, and we plan to purchase travel insurance again.

“I always buy travel insurance, but this was the first time that I’ve used it. We wanted to reschedule or get a refund from the airlines, but they weren’t helpful. On the other hand, Allianz was extraordinarily helpful.”

- Jim Z., Roanoke, VA, October 2019

His Story: My wife and I were all set to go visit our son in Jacksonville, Florida where he is performing his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Florida, when our eldest daughter required brain surgery. Thirteen years ago, she suffered a serious brain injury, and a new treatment recently became available to treat the seizures that have resulted from the original injury. Unfortunately, the timingof the surgery and recovery time overlapped with our planned trip. As her primary caregivers, we couldn’t travel. In total she had two lengthy surgeries and needed constant care during her recovery.

I always buy travel insurance, but this was the first time that I’ve used it. We wanted to reschedule or get a refund from the airlines, but they weren’t helpful. On the other hand, Allianz was extraordinarily helpful. I called he claims line and the customer service agent was very helpful and kind and starteda claim and told me what documentation I would need. I asked her doctor for the needed correspondence and filed the paperwork online. We were quickly reimbursed.

Our daughter is doing well, and we have rescheduled our trip to see our son. Travel insurance is important for taking care of those unexpected things and making new reservations without worrying about losing money.

“My flight was cancelled and my relatives drove me more than 250 miles so I could catch a different flight. Allianz reimbursed their travel costs – the only good part of the whole ordeal.”

- Lucy B., Philadelphia, PA, October 2019

Her Story: After two really bad travel disruptions coming back from Europe to the U.S., I decided that I would always buy travel insurance going forward. I’m glad I did. I had an enjoyable visit with my sister and brother in law at their home in Venice, Florida. We were on our way to the Fort Myers airport in the morning when I got an alert from American that my flight was cancelled, and I was rescheduled for a flight departing late the next day. I needed to be back in Philadelphia, couldn’t wait, and the earliest available flight was out of Tampa the next morning.

Florida is a big state and Ft. Myers is about an hour and a half drive south from my sister’s house. Tampa is about an hour and a half north of my sister’s house. They kindly drove me to the Tampa airport, where I stayed in a lousy motel to catch the early flight out the next day. In all, my relatives drove over 250 miles just to get me on a plane! I was really upset at the airlines and wasn’t sure if they would reimburse me for the inconvenience. When I got back to Philadelphia I made a claim with Allianz for the motel, the cost of the taxi from the motel to the airport and the food and gas that my sister used up driving me around. Allianz quickly reimbursed me without any problems. That was the only good aspect of this entire situation. I don’t travel that often, but for me the $30 policy is worth it because things happen.

“I always buy travel insurance –just in case! –and in this case I needed it. I filed my claim online with Allianz and it was very easy.”

- Patricia O., Menlo Park, CA, October 2019

Her Story: I was supposed to go to Sayulita, Mexico for a wedding when my hip started hurting. I went to see my doctor, had some x rays taken and he said that I shouldn’t travel and that I needed surgery. I always buy travel insurance – just in case! – and in this case I needed it. I filed my claim online with Allianz and it was very easy. I was reimbursed the $1,500 for the airfare and the AirBnB.

I had to cancel another trip I had planned to Italy that I bought travel insurance for through another company. Compared to the hassle I’ve endured to recoup my airfare costs from the other travel insurance company, Allianz has been simple and straight forward.

“I’m really glad I clicked that button when I was buying my flight. You buy these things and you think you’ll never actually need it, but when you do it’s useful. I’ll definitely be purchasing travel insurance going forward.”

- Mary H., Winchester, VA, October 2019

Her Story: My siblings and I regularly take big vacations together. On my first day ofthis year’sbig sibling vacation on Vashon Island in Washington State, we had just arrived at our AirBnB and were getting settled. I made a cup of herbal mint tea and went outside to call my husband and let him know that we had arrived safely. But then I slipped on a moss-covered step and fell. I landed on the cup which shattered, deeply cutting my hand. I told my husband I had to hang up and yelled for my siblings. It was a bad wound, bleeding profusely, and needed immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, being on an island, all the medical services were already closed, so we went to the fire department where they diverted a ferry to come pick me up and take me to the trauma center in downtown Seattle.

In Seattle they patched me up and gave me a cast so I wouldn’t move my fingers. We raced to catch the last ferry back to Vashon Island. Once we were back, it was pretty clear that the plans I had for hiking and kayaking through the Pacific Northwest with my siblings were off. I stayed for a few more days, but I needed to follow up with a doctor and I didn’t feel comfortable seeing anyone besides my primary care doctor. I needed to go home and the airline wanted $300 to change my reservation.

I contacted Allianz and I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful they were. The representative was happy to open a claim for me. All I had to do was provide a copy of the ER discharge papers and my airline reservations, and I took a photo of each with my smartphone and that was good enough! I was so happy that there weren’t a bunch of hoops to jump through to get reimbursed. Shortly after I arrived home, I got a check in the mail covering the extra I had to pay to change my flight.

I had never bought travel insurance before, but my sister-in-law who has a lot of medical issues always does. I’m really glad I clicked that button when I was buying my flight. You buy these things and you think you’ll never actually need it, but when you do it’s useful. I’ll definitely be purchasing travel insurance going forward.

- Jill T., Dallas/Fort Worth, TX, October, 2019

Her Story: I get travel insurance for almost every flight I take. This is mainly because of elderly relatives, and I want to make sure I’m not losing money in the process. I also make sure I have travel insurance when I go on big annual trips such as to the beach. This past summer, I had set up plans three to four months in advance to visit my 85-year-old aunt in Florida. We are very close, and it had been a while since I visited. Shortly before my flight from my home in the Fort Worth, Texas area, she called me to say she was in severe pain. She had not been feeling well, and it turned out the terrible pain was caused by sciatica. I insisted I would still like to come and cook, clean, and help her out, but she told me that I really should visit her another time when we would both be able to enjoy the visit. The pain was unfortunately so bad that she explained it would be best for her to be alone.

Luckily, I knew I would be able to reimburse my flight since I had purchased travel insurance when booking the ticket at the time I booked, well in advance. I explained to my aunt I would only need to get a letter from her doctor. Once she was able to give it to me, I filed the claim and the process was as smooth as silk. I attached the documents, and got my money back in less than three weeks. Everything was really easy, and on top of that, I spoke with a fabulous representative. They were accommodating, told me what to do, how to do it, and it was much easier than I thought it would be.

“I was always skeptical of buying trip insurance. I thought it was just another add-on when purchasing airline tickets. But I’m really glad that I bought it for this trip.”

- Bill M., Kalamazoo, MI, October 2019

His Story: I was always skeptical of buying trip insurance. I thought it was just another add-on when purchasing airline tickets. But I’m really glad that I bought it for this trip. I thought it was a good idea because we were planning a family vacation to attend a wedding in Temecula, California and we were going to make a big week of it. I clicked the box when we were booking our flights and bought the insurance because my wife was recovering from a concussion and I wasn’t sure if she would be able to travel. As it turned out, it was me that couldn’t travel.

Just a few days before our trip I was doing some work on our lake cottage up north in the Manistee National Forest. As I was cleaning debris from the roof I tripped on a guidewire and fell off, landing on my back on concrete. The resulting broken ribs and internal injuries meant I would be the one who caused cancellation of the trip.

As a result, I called to open a claim with the insurer, Allianz. Much to my relief and satisfaction, the agent at Allianz was amazing. He listened carefully, expressed his concern, told me what my choices were and helped me file the claim. I had the discharge papers from the hospital and sent those in electronically. Within five days I received a check in the mail for the airline tickets – the only nonrefundable part of our trip.

This was our first experience buying or filing a claim for travel insurance but I can assure you it will be a regular part of our travel plans in the future. For the cost of $74 dollars on an $800 investment, it is well worth the money and peace of mind that comes with it. My experience with Allianz was excellent from beginning to the end.

“I travel seven times a year – including internationally once a year – and I always purchase travel insurance.”

- Kimberly W., Nampa, ID, October 2019

Her Story: I’ve purchased travel insurance in the past, and it came in handy. A couple of years ago my mom had kidney cancer, and we had to cancel our trip, and because of our travel insurance, we were refunded everything within three days. It is an easy process to purchase travel insurance – all you need to do is click a box. I travel seven times a year –including internationally once a year – and I always purchase travel insurance. I recently traveled with my great uncle and best friend to New Orleans. We didn’t need to file a claim, but it was nice knowing we had it if we neededit. I will never not purchase this amazing policy from Allianz Travel.

“I had never purchased travel insurance before, but because of the circumstances of this trip to visit an ill and elderly relative, the prompt on Delta’s ticketing page reminded me that it might be a good idea. Because it was part of the booking process, it was very easy to get the coverage I needed.”

- Neal F., Tallahassee, FL, October 2019

His Story: In early April, I learned that my aunt, who had been recently diagnosed with a terminal illness, had taken a turn for the worse. My family in upstate New York suggested that if I wanted to see her, now was the time. The soonest I could travel was a week later, but sadly, my aunt passed away before my trip. Since the purpose of my trip had changed, I wanted to cancel and rebook my flight so I could attend her funeral the following week.

Because my aunt was in dying when I booked my original flight, I thought that purchasing travel insurance would be a good idea and clicked the box on the Delta’s website. I’m really glad I did. Changing a reservation and rebooking a flight incurs a lot of fees from the airline almost enough in fees that it can often be cheaper to just rebook outright. In my case, Allianz Global Assistance covered the rebooking costs.

I was amazed just how easy my claim filing process was. My first step was to call to get information on the possibility of filing a claim. Much to my surprise, instead of just answering my inquiry, the representative on the phone helped me immediately file and walked me through each step. He outlined what documentation I needed--just the obituary and the ticketing information--and we were all done. I quickly received the payment through direct deposit.

I never purchased travel insurance before, but because of the circumstances of this trip and Delta’s ticketing page insurance box, I was reminded that it might be a good idea for this trip. Because it was part of the booking process, it was very easy to get the coverage I needed.

“Shortly after submission, I received word my claim was processed and that I would be receiving reimbursement. I was so surprised and happy with the efficiency and overall process.”

- D. Leighann M., SC, September 2019

Her Story: This was my first experience with travel insurance. I decided to purchase itfor our trip because it was happening in December and we were traveling from South Carolina for Virginia. I know that’s a fickle time of year weather-wise, so it seemed like a good idea to invest in travel insurance. I booked our plane tickets through Delta, and there was an option for travel insurance. The booking process was extremely convenient. Purchasing airline tickets was more detailed and time-consuming than obtaining the travel insurance.

Our trip to Fort Lee, VA was planned for myself and two of my stepsons for their dad’s Army ceremony. Unfortunately, Fort Lee did in fact receive several inches of snow just before our travel date and the ceremony was canceled. The thought of having to file a claim was rather intimidating, but I called Allianz to see what type of reimbursement I could be eligible for. I was immediately on the line with an Allianz representative who was attentive and helpful. He placed me on a brief holdless than two minutesand told me what I needed to do to complete my claim process. I finished my claim via the website with supporting documentation and it was seamless. Shortly after submission, I received word my claim was processed and that I would be receiving reimbursement. I was so surprised and happy with the efficiency and overall process. The coverage was excellent and I was blown away by how simple it was.

“I have several upcoming trips planned, and I will continue to purchase the travel insurance and hopefully will not need it, but will be assured that I am not wasting my money.”

- Maggie K., Saint Johns, FL, September 2019

Her Story: I have purchased travel insurance many times, as it’s such a small amount of money and gives me the peace of mind that if I’m ill or have another issue, I don’t lose out on my airfare. When I booked my granddaughter and my flight to Buffalo, NY, I purchased my travel insurance through the airline website after I completed my flight itinerary. The booking process was simple to complete. We unfortunately had to cancel our flight because my granddaughter was ill. I have several upcoming trips planned, and I will continue to purchase the travel insurance and hopefully will not need it, but will be assured that I am not wasting my money.

In both cases, I was treated well and compensated in a timely manner. The Allianz representatives were prompt, polite, and helpful.”

- Janet R., Eugene, OR, September 2019

Her Story: We usually book our trips far in advance. I always feel more comfortable purchasing travel insurance,as one never knows what might come up. Specifically, on adventure trips, it’s nice to have extra financial back-up for any accidents that might occur. Typically, if we book on Alaska Airlines, we just check the place where it says “purchase travel insurance”. For trips not booked through Alaska Airlines, we purchase insurance directly through Allianz. Both options are very convenient.

Last year, I traveled to Santa Fe, NM,and on my way there the plane was delayed and I missed the connection. I had to stay overnight in Seattle, WA, and Allianz covered my hotel accommodation and meals. In 2014, I fell and broke my patella and couldn’t go on a planned trip to Mexico. Allianz reimbursed me for the plane ticket. In both cases, I was treated well and compensated in a timely manner. The Allianz representatives were prompt, polite, and helpful. We have an upcoming trip planned to Mexico and we have already purchased our travel insurance.

I was so happy with how easy the process was, and the policy is very affordable considering the loss I could have endured without it.

- Lishia, Brandon, MS, August 2019

Her story: I purchased travel insurance through the airline at the same time that I bought my tickets for my trip to Hawaii. The trip was planned with my parents, my brother and his wife. My father, in his mid-eighties, is in poor health and he was worried that his physical limitations would prevent my mom from having a good time. I am a nurse, and it gave my parents peace of mind to know that I would be traveling with them and would be able to take some of the physical and mental burden off my mom.

My dad has been sick for the last two years, and each time I have travelled (business or personal) I have insured my trip just in case I'm needed at home. Three weeks before our trip, my father had a serious medical set-back and his doctor recommended that he not travel. Thankfully I was able to cancel my trip to help my parents and didn't have to worry about the financial burden of doing so. My parents, brother and sister-in-law did not purchase travel insurance for their trips and had to take airline vouchers for future use with penalties.

I was so happy with how easy the process was, and the policy is very affordable considering the loss I could have endured without it. I have made some business trips since then and have insured again, but thankfully I haven’t needed to file any claims. Life happens, be ready.

“I saved my receipts from the doctor and pharmacy, and was able to submit an online claim request. The process was very easy. I was very satisfied with how quickly I received my reimbursement check.”

- James E., Royal Oak, MI, August 2019

His Story: Whenever I travel out of the country, I always purchase travel insurance. I have used Allianz for three trips, including my most recent one to Portugal and Barcelona in February. I spent a week in Portugal with a friend, then I spent two weeks traveling solo in Barcelona. On my second day in Barcelona, I started experiencing what I thought were allergy symptoms. After a few days I decided to visit an English-speaking doctor where I was diagnosed with severe flu and bronchitis.

I filled a claim with Allianz once I returned home. At first, I was apprehensive, but the experience was awesome. I saved my receipts from the doctor and pharmacy, and was able to submit an online claim request. The process was very easy. I was very satisfied with how quickly I received my reimbursement check. I took a trip to Paris in April and again purchased Allianz travel insurance – luckily, I didn’t need to file a claim this time, but it is a comfort to have it.

“I was very pleased with the people I talked with and worked with at Allianz when I applied to get a refund on our cancelled airline tickets. The representative was very helpful in getting me started on the steps to take to get the refund application going.”

- Joanne J., Lubbock TX, October 2019

Her Story: I started purchasing travel insurance when I took my first trip overseas.  I wanted to be sure I was covered in case of loss or sickness while abroad so I would have some recourse for help. I continued to purchase travel insurance for every long or international trip since 1992. We planned a trip to Greenville, SC for June, and since my husband and I are both in our late 70s, we opted to purchase the insurance. We used the American Airlines website to buy an Allianz Travel plan because it was so easy– just click on the option to purchase the insurance as you are finishing up paying for the airline tickets. It’s very convenient. Before our trip, my husband had serious health issues occur and the doctor said he could not fly at that time.

I was very pleased with the people I worked with at Allianz when I applied to get a refund for our airline tickets. The representative was very helpful in getting me started on the steps to get the application going. I had never had to do that before and was very grateful for all the kindness and help. I could easily decipher each step and what information I needed to get from the doctor to explain why we had to cancel our trip. I hope we can keep flying to see our children in South Carolina and North Carolina and maybe other locations as well. We will continue to purchase Allianz Travel.

“When looking at what the travel insurance would cover, it was an easy yes for me to purchase it for our trip.”

- Terri D., Carthage, MO, October 2019

Her Story: I recently booked our long overdue vacation for Tampa, FL –the largest one we have ever done with our family of five adults and one infant. When looking at what the travel insurance would cover, it was an easy yes for me to purchase it for our trip.  Life often contains a lot of surprises–not all them good. When I purchased our airline tickets through Delta, I added the option for travel insurance –the booking process was very user friendly. During our trip, tropical storms were hitting the Tampa area. Our return flight was delayed several hours, then finally cancelled, and rescheduled to 24 hours later, so we had to rent two hotel rooms for the night. While our immediate vacation budget was a little tighter than expected, the reimbursement arrived quickly after we returned home so we could apply it elsewhere. We have several possibilities in the works for next year's vacation, and if we choose to fly again, I will definitely purchase the travel insurance without hesitation.

“Allianz will always be a part of my travel expense.”

- Beth B., Wellesley Hills, MA, August 2019

Her Story: I always purchase travel insurance for any trip I take. I consider the cost of the insurance part of the cost of my trip. For my last trip, I booked my travel insurance when the option appeared on the JetBlue website as I was purchasing my airline ticket. I found the process to be very convenient. I recently traveled to Sanibel, FL with a friend. When I checked in 24-hours before for the return flight, I was told my flight out of Ft. Meyers to Boston was cancelled due to a storm. My friend, just seconds before me, was booked on the only available flight that day to Boston. I went to the airport and was able to get on a JetBlue flight to Newark, NJ knowing I could easily find my way back to Boston.  From Newark I took a taxi into New York City, and then transportation from there back home. It was truly a planes, trains and automobile situation! JetBlue was not going to reimburse the additional travel expense since they said I could have waited a few more days for a direct flight to Boston, but that wasn’t a good situation for me.  I called Allianz and the representative was very helpful, walked me through the claim process and I promptly received full reimbursement for the travel expenses incurred once I left Newark airport. Allianz will always be a part of my travel expense.

I’m not in remission [stage four metastatic prostate cancer] and I have no guarantee as to how well I will be at any given time – which makes planning travel difficult... and scary. I now always purchase it for each trip I take to protect myself from so many unforeseen calamities.”

- Ivan M., NY, June 2019

His Story: 12 years ago I was diagnosed with stage four metastatic prostate cancer and given virtually no life expectancy. I was fortunate to transfer my care, and able to enroll in numerous cancer studies at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In my current study, after 61 cycles, I’ve long outlasted its prognosis. The drug in trial is working well (and now FDA approved). I’m not in remission and I have no guarantee as to how well I will be at any given time –which makes planning travel difficult... and scary. I only discovered travel insurance in 2018 by coincidence as I was buying airfare to head to my alma mater to receive an award, and considering my condition it seemed like a good idea. I now always purchase it for each trip I take to protect myself from so many unforeseen calamities. Thank you for peace of mind!

"This January we were supposed to go to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. When I bought the airline tickets in September, I remembered to check the box to opt-in to buy travel insurance and I’m really glad that I did.”

- Andrew C., NY, May 2019

His Story: Every year we take a vacation with six other couples – the wives have all been friends since high school. This January we were supposed to go to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. I developed a chest infection before the trip and my physician said that I couldn’t fly.

My wife and I gave up on going and I reached out to file a claim to get reimbursed for the cancelled flight and resort stay. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to file. Allianz sent the reimbursement quickly and to my surprise, it went into my bank account, not back to my credit card, which was even better as I had already paid the credit card bill.

Before this experience I would say that for 50 percent of the travel that I take, I wouldn’t buy travel insurance, but now I see the value that it has... I shared my experience with the other couples we travel with and recommended that the next time we travel, everyone should opt-into buying travel insurance when they buy their tickets.

“My husband and I were on a trip to Sri Lanka... The day after we landed, my husband had a medical emergency and he ended up in the hospital requiring surgery. The medical and the trip interruption coverage was life-saving for us.”

- Gratefully, California, June 2019

Her Story: My husband and I were on a trip to Sri Lanka as part of a nine-day package tour. The day after we landed, my husband had a medical emergency and he ended up in the hospital requiring surgery. What started as a nine-day visit ended up as a 21-day hospital stay. I had purchased the Allianz Travel Insurance and was so thankful that the hospital accepted it. If I hadn’t had the insurance or the emotional support I received from the Allianz assistance team, I would have been completely lost and alone in the process of getting my husband the urgent care he needed.

Our case manager, Daniel, walked me through the entire process of medical assistance and he kept daily communication with me. He guided me through each step. I was overwhelmed with the situation, alone in another country, and every time I provided Daniel with updates he was calm, competent, and kind. He made me feel like I was close to home.

There was a small hang up at discharge with the billing department, but Allianz Global Assistance stepped right in and made sure the payments were made to the hospital, so we could go home. The medical and the trip interruption coverage was life-saving for us. They even arranged transportation to and from the airport for us upon our return home.

“Just two weeks into his trip he became very ill and was admitted. He couldn’t speak, he didn’t recognize me, and he was in a medically induced coma… After six and a half weeks in the Italian hospital, Allianz Global Assistance was able to work out the complicated logistics to get Steven home to Albany, NY.”

- Cathy & Steve LaPidus, NY, May 2019

Her Story: We have traveled all over the world and usually buy a travel insurance policy. For my husband Steven’s genealogy trip to Italy, he initially wasn’t going to purchase one, since we have never needed to use it, but did so a few weeks before he traveled. We are so grateful for his “peace of mind” purchase because that $79 policy saved us over $100,000 and got him home safely after a tragic medical emergency.

Just two weeks into his trip he became very ill and was admitted to a local hospital near Catanzaro, Italy. He couldn’t speak, he didn’t recognize me, and he was in a medically induced coma. The medical team concluded that he had both sepsis and pneumonia, and had suffered metabolic brain damage. He began to regain speech and memory, but he couldn’t walk or even sit up without help. After 6 ½ weeks in the Italian hospital, Allianz Global Assistance was able to work out the complicated logistics to get Steven home to Albany, NY.

Allianz Global Assistance went above and beyond the call of duty – Lufthansa agreed to transport him but required the use of a medical pod on the plane, which Allianz had never done before. To build the pod, Allianz purchased 16 seats on the aircraft (which were removed), and then Lufthansa installed a private structure that could fit Steven’s stretcher, medical equipment and accommodate the physician and nurse required to travel with him. Upon arrival in the U.S. he was transferred to Albany Medical Center where he spent another two months in rehabilitation.

Throughout the entire process, Allianz Global Assistance was our lifeline. I spoke with them several times a day and they were positive they could bring him home. We can’t even imagine how this situation would have played out had we not had Allianz in our corner. Steven has said that other than our wedding day and the birth of our two children, the day he was able to be transported home was the happiest day of his life.

“In June, my grandfather passed away right before I was supposed to go to Jamaica. Luckily getting reimbursed for the flights and resort were easy. Again, I just filed online and was reimbursed quickly.”

- Moriah W., NY, May 2019

Her Story: Unfortunately, in the past year I’ve had to use my travel insurance coverage twice. I took a lovely vacation to the U.S. Virgin Islands, but on the way back, there were storms on the East Coast and my flights kept getting delayed or cancelled. I got stuck in Puerto Rico for a night, and a second night in Orlando. Those two extra nights in a hotel, meals at the airport and the cost of the train were expenses I hadn’t planned. It was easy to file online to get reimbursed for those costs and nice to not have to worry about the unexpected expense.

In June, my grandfather passed away right before I was supposed to go to Jamaica. Luckily getting reimbursed for the flights and resort were easy. Again, I just filed online and was reimbursed quickly.

Travel insurance is a small investment that protects your larger expenses. I am fine paying $25 for coverage up to $15,000. I always buy it and encourage friends and family to do so as well. I tell them to click the box for travel insurance when they buy their airline tickets. This way I know they’re protected too.

“I began purchasing travel insurance from Allianz about four years ago when I started doing more family travel. I’ve had to use it twice, once on a trip with my sister to Hawaii and my bags never made the connection, and two years ago when four out of seven family members came down with the flu.”

- Martina C., NC, March 2019

Her Story: Two years ago, my niece was visiting from China with her new husband.  My family and I were going to [their] wedding reception for our extended family and friends in her hometown of Chattanooga, TN. A few days before departure, my 6-year-old grandson came down with the flu. It was a terrible flu season and our vaccines didn’t provide us any relief.

One by one, the entire family went down with the illness. I called Allianz Global Assistance and shared what had happened and provided the physician’s note about my grandson.  Out of the seven of us traveling, four were not well enough to make the trip. Four airline tickets is a pretty significant investment. Allianz reimbursed us for each of those tickets. Luckily, we were able to cancel our hotel rooms free of charge.

This is the second time that the insurance has been a lifesaver. My first experience using Allianz Travel Insurance was on a trip with my sister to Hawaii several years ago and my bags never made the connection. I will continue to purchase this coverage for every trip that I take.

“When I bought our tickets through Kayak last year, the policy offered for our trip was $150 and was a financial lifesaver, considering my hospital bill was over $10,000—not to mention the upgraded flight home and the wheelchair van transport. The convenience of buying it at the same time I purchased my airfare was important and worth it.”

- Scott J., GA, May 2019

His Story: We were in Vienna to spend the afternoon sightseeing. It was near dusk, and I was walking on a cobblestone path… when I lost my balance and tripped, rolling off a concrete embankment and crushing both of my heels. My right foot was shattered and my left foot was… fractured. The doctors at the hospital took great care in how they approached my condition and did the x-rays. They put me in temporary plaster casts that went from my feet up to my knees.

Allianz Global Assistance arranged for my safe transport back home, first by coordinating a wheelchair van with a paramedic to take us to the airport. Due to the condition of my legs and restraints from the cast, they upgraded our airline tickets to business class with a seat that enabled my legs to be extended and elevated. Once I arrived in Atlanta, they transported me straight to a local hospital for ongoing care.

I am very grateful for their assistance. I would not have been able to coordinate all the necessary travel arrangements or manage the cost of hospital care in Vienna, as my U.S. health insurance plan doesn’t provide international coverage. I would recommend Allianz Global Assistance to anyone considering a trip.

“I always purchase travel insurance when booking my airfare as a way to ease financial stress should something occur resulting in a canceled trip, and for peace of mind. It’s worth it for the price.”

- Kathleen L., TX, May 2019

Her  Story:  I have been taking domestic-based trips about four to five times a year since 2012… mostly to Wisconsin to visit my family. I always purchase travel insurance when booking my airfare as a way to ease financial stress should something occur resulting in a canceled trip, and for peace of mind. It’s worth it for the price. With Wisconsin, you never know what type of weather might arrive and wreak havoc on your travel plans. We once had to rent a car and drive two days back to Dallas because planes couldn’t take off.

We have only needed to file a claim once – when my mother’s health took a turn for the worse during one of my visits and needed to go immediately into hospice care. The physicians didn’t think she would make it through the week, therefore I canceled my return flight to wait it out. I ended up staying with her for six weeks. Submitting my claim for the airfare was a very easy process – my husband had our insurance policy information and we did everything online. We received our reimbursement very quickly.

The airlines make it easy to purchase by including it as part of the ticket buying process. The first time we purchased it, we printed off the policy that Allianz Global Assistance emails you immediately after completing the transaction and read through it to know what we were covered for.

“A week after I purchased my ticket, I had to cancel my trip due to a medical reason. I had a great experience with Allianz Travel Insurance. I’m recommending travel insurance to all my family and friends…”

- Johanna Ward, NY, May 2019

Her Story: When I was planning my trip to Phoenix, Arizona, in October 2018, I decided to purchase travel insurance along with my plane ticket through the American Airlines website. It was the first time I’ve purchased travel insurance, but I decided it was a good idea after learning my basic economy plane ticket was not eligible for flight changes or refunds. A week after I purchased my ticket, I had to cancel my trip due to a medical reason. I contacted the airline first, with the hope that they would provide me with a refund, travel voucher or credit, but they wouldn’t due to the medical circumstances. I called Allianz Global Assistance and they helped me obtain a full refund.

I had a great experience with Allianz Travel Insurance. The representative was very informative and helpful, and she provided me with the case number and proper forms to fill out. It was an easy process, and I was very thankful for their help. I’m recommending travel insurance to all my family and friends, including a colleague who had to cancel a past trip and was unable to get a refund.

“When my wife and I booked our plane tickets for our trip to London, we decided to purchase travel insurance through the airline’s website. We always purchase travel insurance when we travel.”

- Steve, NY, May 2019

His Story: When my wife and I booked our plane tickets for our trip to London, we decided to purchase travel insurance through the airline’s website. We always purchase travel insurance when we travel. Many people don’t know that typically your U.S. domestic medical insurance does not cover you when you travel internationally.

During our trip to London, we visited the British Museum and while viewing the Elgin Marbles in a dimly lit room, my wife slipped and fractured her left wrist, battered her head, and broke her eye glasses. She was taken to the Princess Grace Hospital in London where she received x-rays on her wrist and a cast, and six stitches over her eye. She also had a big lump on her head the size of a golf ball.

After her accident, we had all these medical bills from the hospital in London. The last thing we wanted to do after our trip was paperwork with travel insurance. We expected a tremendous inconvenience, but Allianz Global Assistance did an excellent, no-hassle job in settling the claim. We got the bills together, uploaded them online to the Allianz website and received our refund check. It was very simple and painless, and could not have been easier or faster. Allianz was very responsive and we’ve been telling our friends how easy it was to settle our claim.

“When you spend the kind of money on a long trip like Hawaii, travel insurance is worth every penny. I’m once again purchasing travel insurance, which I recommend for everyone. You hope nothing ever happens, but it if does, Allianz will back it up.”

- Robert F., Humble, TX, March 2019

His Story: I purchase travel insurance for almost every trip. We take frequent trips to Hawaii to visit our son, who lives in Oahu and is a psychiatrist for PTSD patients. Last August, we traveled to Hawaii during hurricane Lane. We were on the northwest side of the island, and the hurricane was predicted to stay on the western side.

The day we were leaving the hurricane moved to the central and eastern side of the island, and we experienced 40 inches of rain. The main road was forced to close due to flooding… and when the road finally reopened, we jumped in our car… and drove to the airport. As soon as we arrived, the road closed again. We were lucky that we made it on time, and I didn’t have to use our travel insurance to change our flights. With that said, it made us feel less stressed knowing that we had the safety net of Allianz Global Assistance in our back pocket.

“My bill could have been thousands but I knew I had coverage. Allianz Travel Insurance was my safety net for the trip.”

- Rene Hensley, NY, March 2019

Her Story: I have been using Allianz Travel Insurance for… [decades]. I’ve never had a problem, but I’ve come close a couple of times. I travel one to two times a year with family and friends, and travel insurance gives me piece of mind to know I’m covered if any accidents were to occur.

Last summer, my wife and 18 of our friends took a cruise from New York to the Bahamas, stopping in Florida and a private island. I know my regular insurance doesn’t cover me when I’m outside the U.S., so I once again purchased travel insurance for the cruise. When we arrived at the private island, we had to take a smaller boat to shore. The boat was rocking and I fell and broke my wrist.

I went to see the cruise doctor for x-rays and treatment. While I was waiting to be seen, another passenger came in with a sunburn and they charged her $21 for a small bottle of aloe vera. Luckily, they didn’t charge me for the treatment; in addition to the x-ray, I received a cream for the inflammation, pain pills and a shot. My bill could have been thousands but I knew I had coverage. Allianz Travel Insurance was my safety net for the trip.

“These trips are a significant financial investment and we believe it’s crucial to protect ourselves. While we are fortunate that we have never had to file a claim, obtaining coverage from Allianz is a natural part of our trip planning process.”

- Andrea Raymond, RI, March 2019

Her  Story:  We started purchasing travel insurance about five years ago after my father, who is now 92 years old, suffered a stroke. This was a life altering event and made us realize that with our aging parents and their medical issues, we need to be financially covered. We take about one big trip a year, which has recently included Ireland, Costa Rica, and Bermuda, with our honeymoon in Hawaii planned for this summer. These trips are a significant financial investment and we believe it’s crucial to protect ourselves.”

“The claim process was smooth and I was so pleased to know that it was a worthy investment after my trip was interrupted. Allianz [ Global Assistance] was very transparent and the refund process was very easy and convenient. I plan on using Allianz again for all my future international trips.”

- Jake B., WA, May 2019

His Story: I travel a ton for work and I love international travel. I found a great deal on a flight to London from San Francisco. I was 80 percent sure I would take the trip, but since I got such a great price on the flight, I decided to purchase the travel insurance when I booked my ticket. I have never used travel insurance before, because I’d always had this feeling that when I really needed it some loophole wouldn't allow someone in my position to receive a refund. However, that turned out not to be the case.

I was under the weather about a week and a half before my trip, and I also found out my close buddy in the military wasn’t going to be able to travel to London with me. I was not feeling good about being sick and leaving the country by myself, so I decided to reach out to Allianz Global Assistance and start the process of cancelling the trip.

The claim process was smooth and I was so pleased to know that it was a worthy investment after my trip was interrupted. I went to urgent care, submitted the proper paper work to Allianz Global Assistance, and about a week later received a refund check. Allianz was very transparent and the refund process was very easy and convenient. I plan on using Allianz again for all my future international trips.

“My partner Karen broke her collarbone skiing in Banff, Canada. We had to pay her $1,000 medical bill out of pocket. I didn’t realize that our Allianz Travel Insurance covered that bill until we got home. The claims process was easy and fast!”

- Blake T., Austin, TX, July 2019

His Story: While on a skiing vacation this winter in Banff, Canada, my partner Karen took a nasty spill. She caught an edge, flipped over and landed on her right shoulder. Sure enough, she had a broken collarbone. Though we have medical insurance, it doesn’t include international coverage. I had to pay the $1,000 hospital bill with my credit card.

When we got home, I was going through some paperwork and throwing things out when the words “medical coverage” on my Allianz Travel Insurance policy caught my eye. I had thought that travel insurance was just to cover your flights and baggage – not medical problems. I went to the Allianz Travel Insurance website and filled out the forms, submitted a copy of the hospital bill and they sent me a check very quickly. The whole process was super easy and the customer service representatives were very helpful.

I usually only buy travel insurance when flying internationally and I bought it for this trip because of the time of year. I was concerned that we might be delayed or cancelled due to weather, but it never crossed my mind that we would be covered in case of an accident or illness. I’m really glad I clicked the box when I bought my airline tickets and will make sure to purchase travel insurance for future trips.

Her Story: I spent months planning and preparing for a Woman Tours Bike and Barge Trip in the Netherlands. I don’t have much experience with traveling outside of the country, so I took the Woman Tours’ advice and purchased an insurance plan through Allianz Travel Insurance.

The first day of the tour I crashed my bike. When we docked again I was able to get an x-ray and the doctor informed me my elbow would need surgery but that it could wait until I was home. The orthopedic surgeon applied a cast from elbow to knuckles.  I returned to the barge where I reached out to Allianz Global Assistance about getting home as soon as possible. I was a moving target on the barge, which made an evacuation challenging to arrange. My case manager was able to arrange door to door service for me. They even upgraded my ticket to business class to help ease the discomfort of my plaster cast. I felt incredibly well cared for – Allianz Global Assistance made the difficulty of the situation easier to bear.

- Ellen C., ME, July 2019

Her Story: My husband, Jim, and I were vacationing in Antigua when a tragic accident occurred. A wave crashed into Jim’s back, dumping him head first into the sand. He knew immediately something was wrong – he couldn’t move and was experiencing paralysis. The resort was not equipped for catastrophic events, and we had to stabilize him on a surfboard until emergency services arrived. He was transported to a local hospital, where there was no sense of urgency to assess or treat him, mold covered ceilings, and a significant lack of sterilization techniques. It was imperative to get Jim to a U.S. hospital.

Allianz Global Assistance began to make urgent medical evacuation plans. The University of Miami Hospital’s neuro team put in fresh IVs, conducted MRI and CT scans, and Jim was quickly diagnosed with Central Cord Syndrome. He went straight into the OR for a surgical fusion. Jim spent three weeks in rehab in Miami where he made incredible strides and then was discharged to our hometown near Boston for outpatient therapy.

Allianz Global Assistance, particularly our case manager, was phenomenal throughout this process. They were comforting, compassionate and saved us from financial debt. I’m so grateful that we purchased the insurance and we’ll continue to do so for all of our trips once Jim is fully recovered and ready for our next adventure.

- Denise and Jim S., Bradford, MA, June 2019

“I was happy to have that peace of mind for this costly trip, and at a nominal cost. It was a very easy process… getting our money back for a trip we could not take due to a family member's medical emergency.”

 - Debi Schwartz, CA, August 2019

Her Story: I have used Allianz Travel Insurance for two trips with a cancellation or delay in the past three years and have been very pleased with their service both times. In 2015, my husband, my mother-in-law and I had planned to take a trip to Europe. I purchased travel insurance out of concern for my mother-in-law’s health. Because of the high cost of our travel, I wanted to make sure we would be reimbursed if we had to cancel due to a health issue in the family.

My own mom was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and was admitted to the hospital the day we were to fly out. Instead of leaving for Europe, we headed to the hospital where my mom was in ICU.  After she was stable, we were able to work with Allianz Global Assistance on getting reimbursed for our expensive flights… it was a very easy process. We were very grateful that we had Allianz Global Assistance to work with on getting our money back for a trip we could not take due to a family member's medical emergency.

“I found that filing the claim was so easy! I never assumed I would be reimbursed, but Allianz Global Assistance did pay for my expense. I was so thankful. It really helped in a difficult situation.”

- Debbie F., CA, July 2019

Her Story: My brother-in-law is in in poor health due to paralysis.  He broke his arm from a fall and required surgery with plates to encourage the break to heal.  His doctors anticipated he would be bedridden for a while during his recovery, so I planned to fly to Alaska from California to help my sister care for him and their home. Both of us were very tight on money, so my sister had me use her air miles and I agreed to pay the associated costs myself, like flight insurance, which I always buy, just in case of disaster.

My brother-in-law caught pneumonia immediately after surgery and had to stay in the rehab hospital for a few weeks. Because of this, I had to change my ticket with the associated change fee of $200, which was an unexpected and unaffordable cost. I didn’t even think about filing a claim for it until my sister urged me to do so. I was astonished at how clear cut it was. Even then, I never assumed I would be reimbursed, as it wasn’t a disaster, but Allianz Global Assistance did pay for my expense. It really helped in a difficult situation.

“I always buy trip insurance… it’s nice to have that peace of mind in case travel plans change. I had to cancel my family’s travel five hours before we departed for Spring Break due to my son getting the flu.”

- Leslie P., Seattle, WA, July 2019

Her Story: This past spring break we had plans to visit elderly relatives on Long Island and then fly down to Houston to see family. Each leg of the trip was booked with a different airline and we bought separate travel insurance with each ticket. A day before we were supposed to leave, my teenage son was complaining that his wrist hurt… and with a 103˚F fever, he had a rapid flu test done – it was positive. An x-ray showed that his wrist was also broken.

I called and cancelled our trip with the airline and took my son home to recuperate. What surprised me the most is how easy it was to file our claim with Allianz Global Assistance versus the other travel insurance I had for the flights from Long Island to Houston. Filing a claim with Allianz Global Assistance was fast and easy, and the money was direct deposited into my bank account within a week. With the other insurance company, I had to fill out three forms and have the doctor to fill out a form that I had to drop off at the clinic. It took a long time… they made it really hard to get my $400 back compared to how easy it was with Allianz Global Assistance.

“It’s better to have it [travel insurance] in your back pocket than be without and have an emergency. Allianz Global Assistance was tremendous and I am recommending it to all our relatives and friends who travel.”

- Ray R., Cohoes, NY, July 2019

His Story: My wife Sandra and I took a trip to New Orleans to celebrate my 50th reunion of a Coast Guard Cutter that I was involved in commissioning back in 1969.  The day we were supposed to fly back home my wife suffered a massive heart attack. Luckily for us, the EMTs arrived within 10 minutes and took her to Tulane University Hospital. The doctors worked quickly to put some stents in, and she needed to stay a few days before being cleared to travel. I asked our current hotel if I could extend my stay, but they were booked. Instead, they found me a hotel room at the Holiday Inn Express. When I checked out our bill for $750 for two nights. I was shocked not just by the amount of money, but the unexpected additional expense.

When I returned home, I realized I had purchased travel insurance. I contacted Allianz Global Assistance and the representative asked me to submit the expense records. Within two weeks I received a check for the full amount, including reimbursement for the airline change fee, which I didn’t expect. We never thought we would need to use the insurance, but now I’ll get it every time we travel.

“I booked my trip through American Airlines… trip insurance was offered and I decided it would be a good idea to insure since I was booking over two months in advance and I'd be traveling alone.”

- Connie Minix, Raytown, MO, July 2019

Her Story: I flew to Mobile, AL for a stay in Gulf Shores with friends. When heading home, my return flight was delayed multiple times before finally being cancelled due to severe storms. It was nearly midnight, and most of the lodging near the airport had no vacancy. I called for emergency assistance through Allianz Global Assistance and in less than 15 minutes, I had confirmation that I could check into the Marriott. The assistance I received from the Allianz Global Assistance representative was prompt, courteous and very helpful. Since I was alone in a strange city, this assistance was very much appreciated. The claim process was easy to complete, and my expense was quickly compensated. I will likely use trip insurance for future flights.

“It was extremely convenient to buy the insurance as I bought my ticket. It was accessible and I liked being able to combine it with my purchase, and I would hope you continue to provide this service.”

- Tricia S., Indian River, MI, August 2019

Her Story: My husband and I saved for a year in order to book our upcoming trip to Iceland, which is later this fall.  When I purchased our tickets, I also bought Allianz Travel Insurance. It was a no brainer to get insurance to have assurance for something that I saved so long for. The airline that we purchased our tickets through was WOW Airlines. Shortly after I booked our airfare I got an email that the airline shut down, leaving passengers stranded. They offered no assistance and suggested I talk to our credit card company. That didn’t help, though, because I paid cash for our tickets.  Fortunately, Allianz Global Assistance immediately covered my airfare so that I was able to re-book. When I purchased our new tickets on Kayak, I purchased Allianz Travel Insurance a second time.

“Travel insurance is a must. People are crazy not to buy it. I have had to use it twice, and it made an aggravating situation better.”

- Shelley B., Palm Springs, CA, July 2019

Her Story: Most recently, I was traveling from Boston to Palm Springs – I was actually in the process of moving there – and the day of my flight it snowed in Boston. JetBlue cancelled and rescheduled me for a date that was too late in the week for a medical appointment. I ended up cancelling the JetBlue flight, and booking on United, but then, that flight was canceled as well. I had to rebook a second time. The price difference between my original Jet Blue fare, and the final flight on United was about $200.  I submitted the claim online to Allianz Global Assistance along with the documentation about the cancelled flights, not knowing if it would be covered.  With no questions asked, I was notified that my claim was approved.

A few years ago I also had a horrendous travel experience with cancelled flights, hotel rooms required and other unexpected costs. Allianz Travel Insurance covered all of these expenses without any hassle.

I get the insurance every time I travel when I’m buying my ticket. I probably wouldn’t think about the insurance if it wasn’t part of my airline ticket. It’s not expensive and for me, particularly with an elderly mother, I might have to cancel at the last minute. I wouldn’t travel without it.
