Her Story: This past spring my husband and I were on a two week beach vacation in Mexicowith a handful of our relatives. Two evenings before we were supposed to head home, I had intense abdominal pain and was immobile–which turned out to be an acute case of pancreatitis. The condo manager called a physician to come check my vitals, and ultimately recommended I go straight to a hospital. They made arrangements to send me to a private hospital where I was immediately admitted and put on IVs. The hospital charged the first day to our credit card which totaled $4,000. Luckily, we had recently purchased annual plans through the company since we travel often as retirees. Our representative immediately took over. She talked directly to the hospital and handled all communication and aspects of my care. Our wonderful representative also stayed in touch with my husband the entire time. After five days I was well enough to be discharged, and Allianz handled everything for our return flight as we had clearly missed our originally planned departure. While in the Mexican hospital there were a few other Americans who were having a terrible time –even those with insurance. Someone asked us which insurance plan we had and I was so happy to tell them “we have Allianz.” We couldn’t be happier with the customer service and care we received!
The claims process was terrific. We were in Mexico and I was in a hospital and the claims representative took care of the hospital and the doctor bills over the phone. Rachel Davis was terrific. There were no issues, she made it so easy. Then when we came home, we did everything online submitting the expenses incurred for other related matters -prescriptions, travel changes, etc. And that was very smooth as well. His Story: This was our first-time purchasing travel insurance and I’m one hundred percent happy that we did. A few things were up in the air with our trip to Cozumel, Mexico, and we decided to purchase the insurance so we could have the flexibility to make changes if needed. We purchased our Allianz plan through the American Airlines website when we bought our airline tickets – it was very convenient. My wife, daughter, daughter’s friend and I were scheduled to fly to Cozumel in mid-June, but the day before departure we received an email from American Airlines cancelling the flight due to predicted bad weather in Dallas, TX (where we were scheduled to have a short layover). We were scrambling to find an alternative flight to Cozumel, and the weather in Dallas ended up being fine (80 degrees with clear skies). We found another flight, but it flew into a different city –Cancun –and it had over a 6-hour layover in Florida. When we returned from our trip, I sent a strongly-worded letter to American Airlines, but they told me it was not their policy to compensate expenses as a result of cancelled flights. We then reached out to Allianz, who instructed us to submit our receipts –close to $800 –for the expenses we incurred during our longer, unexpected layover in Florida, and the transportation costs from Cancun to Cozumel. Allianz made the claim process smooth and easy.

His Story: My wife and I decided to purchase travel insurance for our trip to Peru because we felt it would be worth it in case something was to happen. We have used Allianz travel insurance many times in the past and have never needed to file a claim. We purchased separate policies for our trip because we used airline points from two different accounts. This trip we had multiple issues, resulting in claims on both policies.
We traveled to Cusco, Peru –elevation nearly 12,000 ft above sea level–and my wife had difficulty adjusting to the elevation level. After a day, she was still not able to get acclimated and was experiencing difficulty breathing. The hotel gave her a few minutes of oxygen, but that wasn’t enough, so they called a local clinic where she stayed for 8-9 hours for oxygen treatments. I contacted Allianz to let them know she was in the hospital, and they coordinated directly with the medical staff as well asour health insurance company. Allianz resolved the issue without requiring us to be overly involved –it was an extremely easy process for us.
At the end of our trip, as we were just about to leave for the airport to fly home, our American Airlines flight was cancelled. The airline wasn’t going to give us a voucher for a hotel, but luckily, we were able to check right back into hotel we were previously staying at until we departed the next day on our rescheduled flight. I was able to submit and process my claim for the extra night at the hotel with Allianz when I returned home. Both claims covered the complete cost of the covered issues.We are planning more trips in the future and it’s worth it for us to purchase travel insurance again.

His Story: My wife and I were all set to go visit our son in Jacksonville, Florida where he is performing his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Florida, when our eldest daughter required brain surgery. Her Story: After two really bad travel disruptions coming back from Europe to the U.S., I decided that I would always buy travel insurance going forward. I’m glad I did. I had an enjoyable visit with my sister and brother in law at their home in Venice, Florida. We were on our way to the Fort Myers airport in the morning when I got an alert from American that my flight was cancelled, and I was rescheduled for a flight departing late the next day. I needed to be back in Philadelphia, couldn’t wait, and the earliest available flight was out of Tampa the next morning.
Florida is a big state and Ft. Myers is about an hour and a half drive south from my sister’s house. Tampa is about an hour and a half north of my sister’s house. They kindly drove me to the Tampa airport, where I stayed in a lousy motel to catch the early flight out the next day. In all, my relatives drove over 250 miles just to get me on a plane! I was really upset at the airlines and wasn’t sure if they would reimburse me for the inconvenience. When I got back to Philadelphia I made a claim with Allianz for the motel, the cost of the taxi from the motel to the airport and the food and gas that my sister used up driving me around. Allianz quickly reimbursed me without any problems. That was the only good aspect of this entire situation. I don’t travel that often, but for me the $30 policy is worth it because things happen.

Her Story: My siblings and I regularly take big vacations together. On my first day ofthis year’sbig sibling vacation on Vashon Island in Washington State, we had just arrived at our AirBnB and were getting settled. I made a cup of herbal mint tea and went outside to call my husband and let him know that we had arrived safely. But then I slipped on a moss-covered step and fell. I landed on the cup which shattered, deeply cutting my hand. I told my husband I had to hang up and yelled for my siblings. It was a bad wound, bleeding profusely,and needed immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, being on an island, all the medical services were already closed, so we went to the fire department where they diverted a ferry to come pick me up and take me to the trauma center in downtown Seattle.
In Seattle they patched me up and gave me a cast so I wouldn’t move my fingers. We raced to catch the last ferry back to Vashon Island. Once we were back, it was pretty clear that the plans I had for hiking and kayaking through the Pacific Northwest with my siblings were off. I stayed for a few more days, but I needed to follow up with a doctor and I didn’t feel comfortable seeing anyone besides my primary care doctor. I needed to go home and the airline wanted $300 to change my reservation.
I contacted Allianz and I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful they were. The representative was happy to open a claim for me. All I had to do was provide a copy of the ER discharge papers and my airline reservations, and I took a photo of each with my smartphone and that was good enough! I was so happy that there weren’t a bunch of hoops to jump through to get reimbursed. Shortly after I arrived home, I got a check in the mail covering the extra I had to pay to change my flight.

Her Story: I get travel insurance for almost every flight I take. This is mainly because of elderly relatives, and I want to make sure I’m not losing money in the process. I also make sure I have travel insurance when I go on big annual trips such as to the beach. This past summer, I had set up plans three to four months in advance to visit my 85-year-old aunt in Florida. We are very close, and it had been a while since I visited. Shortly before my flight from my home in the Fort Worth, Texas area, she called me to say she was in severe pain. She had not been feeling well, and it turned out the terrible pain was caused by sciatica. I insisted I would still like to come and cook, clean, and help her out, but she told me that I really should visit her another time when we would both be able to enjoy the visit. I thought it was a good idea because we were planning a family vacation to attend a wedding in Temecula, California and we were going to make a big week of it. I clicked the box when we were booking our flights and bought the insurance because my wife was recovering from a concussion and I wasn’t sure if she would be able to travel. As it turned out, it was me that couldn’t travel.
Just a few days before our trip I was doing some work on our lake cottage up north in the Manistee National Forest. As I was cleaning debris from the roof I tripped on a guidewire and fell off, landing on my back on concrete. The resulting broken ribs and internal injuries meant I would be the one who caused cancellation of the trip.
As a result, I called to open a claim with the insurer, Allianz. Much to my relief and satisfaction, the agent at Allianz was amazing. He listened carefully, expressed his concern, told me what my choices were and helped me file the claim. I had the discharge papers from the hospital and sent those in electronically. Within five days I received a check in the mail for the airline tickets – the only nonrefundable part of our trip.
This was our first experience buying or filing a claim for travel insurance but I can assure you it will be a regular part of our travel plans in the future. For the cost of $74 dollars on an $800 investment, it is well worth the money and peace of mind that comes with it. My experience with Allianz was excellent from beginning to the end.

His Story: In early April, I learned that my aunt, who had been recently diagnosed with a terminal illness, had taken a turn for the worse. My family in upstate New York suggested that if I wanted to see her, now was the time. The soonest I could travel was a week later, but sadly, my aunt passed away before my trip. Much to my surprise, instead of just answering my inquiry, the representative on the phone helped me immediately file and walked me through each step. Her Story: We usually book our trips far in advance. I always feel more comfortable purchasing travel insurance,as one never knows what might come up. Specifically, on adventure trips, it’s nice to have extra financial back-up for any accidents that might occur. For trips not booked through Alaska Airlines, we purchase insurance directly through Allianz. Both options are very convenient.

Her story: I purchased travel insurance through the airline at the same time that I bought my tickets for my trip to Hawaii. The trip was planned with my parents, my brother and his wife. My father, in his mid-eighties, is in poor health and he was worried that his physical limitations would prevent my mom from having a good time. I am a nurse, and it gave my parents peace of mind to know that I would be traveling with them and would be able to take some of the physical and mental burden off my mom.

His Story: Whenever I travel out of the country, I always purchase travel insurance. I have used Allianz for three trips, including my most recent one to Portugal and Barcelona in February. For my last trip, I booked my travel insurance when the option appeared on the JetBlue website as I was purchasing my airline ticket. I found the process to be very convenient. I recently traveled to Sanibel, FL with a friend. When I checked in 24-hours before for the return flight, I was told my flight out of Ft. Meyers to Boston was cancelled due to a storm. My friend, just seconds before me, was booked on the only available flight that day to Boston. I went to the airport and was able to get on a JetBlue flight to Newark, NJ knowing I could easily find my way back to Boston. From Newark I took a taxi into New York City, and then transportation from there back home. It was truly a planes, trains and automobile situation! JetBlue was not going to reimburse the additional travel expense since they said I could have waited a few more days for a direct flight to Boston, but that wasn’t a good situation for me. I called Allianz and the representative was very helpful, walked me through the claim process and I promptly received full reimbursement for the travel expenses incurred once I left Newark airport. Allianz will always be a part of my travel expense.

I had purchased the Allianz Travel Insurance and was so thankful that the hospital accepted it. If I hadn’t had the insurance or the emotional support I received from the Allianz assistance team, I would have been completely lost and alone in the process of getting my husband the urgent care he needed.
Our case manager, Daniel, walked me through the entire process of medical assistance and he kept daily communication with me. He guided me through each step. Her Story: We have traveled all over the world and usually buy a travel insurance policy. For my husband Steven’s genealogy trip to Italy, he initially wasn’t going to purchase one, since we have never needed to use it, but did so a few weeks before he traveled. Just two weeks into his trip he became very ill and was admitted to a local hospital near Catanzaro, Italy. He couldn’t speak, he didn’t recognize me, and he was in a medically induced coma. Allianz Global Assistance went above and beyond the call of duty – Lufthansa agreed to transport him but required the use of a medical pod on the plane, which Allianz had never done before. To build the pod, Allianz purchased 16 seats on the aircraft (which were removed), and then Lufthansa installed a private structure that could fit Steven’s stretcher, medical equipment and accommodate the physician and nurse required to travel with him. Upon arrival in the U.S. he was transferred to Albany Medical Center where he spent another two months in rehabilitation.
Throughout the entire process, Allianz Global Assistance was our lifeline. I spoke with them several times a day and they were positive they could bring him home. We can’t even imagine how this situation would have played out had we not had Allianz in our corner. Steven has said that other than our wedding day and the birth of our two children, the day he was able to be transported home was the happiest day of his life.

Her Story: Two years ago, my niece was visiting from China with her new husband. His Story: We were in Vienna to spend the afternoon sightseeing. It was near dusk, and I was walking on a cobblestone path… when I lost my balance and tripped, rolling off a concrete embankment and crushing both of my heels. My right foot was shattered and my left foot was… fractured. The doctors at the hospital took great care in how they approached my condition and did the x-rays. They put me in temporary plaster casts that went from my feet up to my knees.

We always purchase travel insurance when we travel. Many people don’t know that typically your U.S. domestic medical insurance does not cover you when you travel internationally.
During our trip to London, we visited the British Museum and while viewing the Elgin Marbles in a dimly lit room, my wife slipped and fractured her left wrist, battered her head, and broke her eye glasses. She was taken to the Princess Grace Hospital in London where she received x-rays on her wrist and a cast, and six stitches over her eye. She also had a big lump on her head the size of a golf ball.

Last summer, my wife and 18 of our friends took a cruise from New York to the Bahamas, stopping in Florida and a private island. Her Story: My husband, Jim, and I were vacationing in Antigua when a tragic accident occurred. A wave crashed into Jim’s back, dumping him head first into the sand. Her Story: Most recently, I was traveling from Boston to Palm Springs – I was actually in the process of moving there – and the day of my flight it snowed in Boston. JetBlue cancelled and rescheduled me for a date that was too late in the week for a medical appointment. I ended up cancelling the JetBlue flight, and booking on United, but then, that flight was canceled as well. I had to rebook a second time. The price difference between my original Jet Blue fare, and the final flight on United was about $200.
