RICHMOND, Va., August 14, 2026 – Travel insurance provider Allianz Partners  has revealed that trips booked to Greece have increased 20% since buzz began to build over the Christopher Nolan movie “The Odyssey*.”

The film has caused what some are calling “The Odyssey Effect,” increasing interest in travel to Greece.  Allianz Partners-insured bookings to Greece taking place between June 27 and July 27 increased 20% compared with 2025.

Thanks to its unique and popular attractions, as well as The Odyssey Effect, Greece has been one of Europe’s fastest growing destinations. Allianz Partners’ data showed that 91% of insured customers traveling to Greece flew into Athens to explore the country, while others traveled to the country’s famed islands, including Mykonos, Santorini and Crete.

 The data also found that:

  • The average insured trip to Greece reached approximately 11 days, up from roughly nine days in 2025.
  • Average ticket costs increased 3% year over year, consistent with broader increases seen across international travel.

While no single factor determines where travelers choose to vacation, Greece's surge comes during a summer in which Greek mythology and Mediterranean landscapes have taken center stage in popular culture. The highly anticipated release of “The Odyssey,” along with continued interest in destination-driven entertainment and social media, may be helping inspire travelers to experience Greece firsthand, a continuation of the "screen-to-scene" travel trend Allianz Partners identified in 2025.

“Greece continues to be one of the most sought-after destinations for American travelers because it offers something for everyone, from a rich history and famous landmarks to coastal escapes and immersive cultural experiences,” said Emily Hartman, General Manager at Allianz Partners. “Travel inspiration today comes from many places, including blockbuster films, streaming shows, social media, and major cultural moments. Whether travelers are revisiting a favorite destination or discovering a new one like Greece, they're making a significant investment in their trips, making it more important than ever to plan ahead and protect their travels with travel insurance.”

Methodology

The data on bookings to Greece was derived from an analysis of insured trips booked through partner websites offering Allianz Partners travel insurance for roundtrip flights departing from U.S. airports to Greece from 6/27/2026–7/27/2026 and 6/27/2025–7/26/2025.
