RICHMOND, Va., September 28, 2026 – A new survey from travel insurance provider Allianz Partners found that a significant majority of US consumers say they are more likely now to purchase travel insurance to protect their trips, compared to trips in the past. The survey of 1,000 travelers who have purchased travel insurance, found that 78% were more likely to purchase travel insurance now compared with trips in the past few years. When asked why they feel more likely to purchase travel insurance, 45% cited current higher trip costs, 44% said that travel seems more prone to disruption (e.g. delays, cancellations), 34% said the world feels more uncertain overall, and 33% noted a previous, positive experience with travel insurance.
The survey also found that consumers prefer booking trips with travel suppliers that offer travel insurance. When asked about their travel supplier, 90% of those surveyed said that they would book again with the same travel supplier that offered travel insurance for their trip, 70% said that the availability of travel insurance influences their choice of a booking channel or supplier a great deal or quite a bit, and 82% prefer booking with suppliers that offer built in travel protection options.
Other findings from the survey indicated that nearly 9 in 10 (88%) agreed that travel insurance gives them peace of mind when they travel and 76% agreed that travel insurance is a good value for the price, with 88% noting that they had a positive experience purchasing travel insurance and 90% saying the purchase process went smoothly. Of the travelers surveyed, 85% felt confident they knew what they were buying. When asked how satisfied they were with the last trip they bought travel insurance for, 92% said they were very or somewhat satisfied.
Asked about their travel insurance claims process, of the 45% of respondents who had made a claim or contacted customer assistance, 89% rated their claim experience positively, 85% said it was easy to get help or file a claim, 85% said the outcome felt fair and 84% said the process was handled quickly enough, and importantly, 80% said the experience increased their trust in the company that sold the insurance. Most notably, 83% of those surveyed said the experience increased their trust in the travel supplier that sold them their trip.
“Our new survey finds that American travelers value travel insurance protection and have had an overwhelmingly positive experience using it,” said Daniel Durazo, Director of External Communications at Allianz Partners USA. “For travel suppliers, the survey found that consumers prefer to book their trips with suppliers that offer travel protection, making the case that travel insurance can increase repeat business and customer loyalty.”
